About the Journal
FFS (eISSN 1336-4529) is an international, peer-reviewed,
open-access, online journal
FFS welcomes reports on research of fauna, ecology and taxonomy, species lists, catalogues, identification keys, bionomy observations, zoogeography of fauna in the Carpathian and Pannonian regions.
FFS provides:
- Open-access—freely accessible online
- Fast publication times—generally, all contributions are published within one
month when accepted by the editorial board
- Peer review by experts, practicing researchers
Editorial board consists of representatives of diverse institutions and research fields in zoology and quality of the journal is supervised by the International Advisory Board

Peer Review
FFS will peer-review all submissions and publish all papers that are judged to be sound with the journal requirements. Mostly two referees revue each artcicle.
Open access
FFS applies the Creative Commons Attribution License to all works we publish. Under the CCAL, authors retain ownership of the copyright for their article, but authors allow anyone to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute, and/or copy articles, so long as the original authors and source are cited.
No publication charges
There is no charges for publishing in the journal Folia faunistica Slovaca. Authors are encouraged to buy reprints of the journal, as it is the only source to cover peer review, journal production, and online hosting and archiving of journal.
Editorial and Peer-Review Process
Each submission to FFS passes through a strict quality control and peer-review evaluation process before accepting.
Criteria for publication in FFS are as follows:
- The study presents the results of primary scientific research or is oriented
for such a research or provides the nature protection with scientifica arguments
- Results reported have not been published elsewhere
- Experiments, statistics, and other analyses are performed to a high technical
standard and are described in sufficient detail
- Conclusions are presented in an appropriate fashion and are supported by the
data
- The article is presented in an intelligible fashion and is written in standard
English, or in Slovak or Czech languages with English abstract.
Once the manuscript has passed quality control, it is assigned to a editor of journal, who takes responsibility for the submission. The Editor is responsible for conducting the peer-review process and for making a decision to accept, invite revision of, or reject the article.
Most articles accepted for publication are being sent for review by external experts, small portion are peer reviewed by the editors themselves (in consultation with other members of the Editorial Board) when they are sufficiently expert in the field.
Principally, all accepted articles are peer-reviewed by at least two experts (by editor and by external peer reviewer).
Standards of the journal
Both scientific and technical standards of FFS are high.
Scientific standards:
Published articles are real contribution to knowledge of biodiversity, taxonomy
or ecology of fauna; described Material and Methods allow repeatability.
Descriptions in the Results are sound, complete and appropriate, that rules of
the International Code of Nomenclature are followed, locations of type material
(including coordinates) of new taxa are given, etc. All papers end with a
discussion, even a short one, clearly outlining the (international) relevance of
the work presented.
Technical standards:
All titles, weywords and abstracts of articles must be written in English, the
main text should be in English, Slovak or Czech languages. Authors can use their
own style, as long as the manuscript in linguistically correct. Illustrations
must be of high quality and very detailed.
