Abstract: Survey of species of ciliates (Ciliophora) reported at Slovakia since 1920 till 1996 including actualised synonyms. Data are stored in the Databank of Slovak Fauna (Matis 1991), where along with further information on localities, biotopes and dates of sampling. Complete bibliography on occurrence of ciliates in territory of Slovakia. Following biotopes and localities have been analysed: stagnant and running waters, sumberged, wet and dry mooses, peatery, periodic, thermal waters, springs and soils. There have been 585 species of ciliated protozoa (Ciliophora) reported at Slovakia.

Abstract: The present paper deals with the published as well as own unpublished data concerning the beetle fauna associated with oaks in Slovakia. Altogether 468 beetle species from 51 families were confirmed. The regular and most numerous occurrence has 49 species (10.47%). All data on the occurrence, trophic groups and bionomics of both adults and larvae are presented in table.

Survey of threatened and rare species of bees in Slovakia [in Slovak with English abstract]

Abstract: Threatened biotopes and their consistent protection connected with protection of bees, bumblebees, as well as other species of Hymenoptera are analysed. In the first place it concerns rare Mediterranean species occurring in areas with driftsand. These remnants of sandy biotopes are threatened by overgrowing with acacia and planting out pine monoculture. They are situated in southern Slovakia (Chotín, Marcelová, Čenkov). Occurrence of some species found here in 50´s and 60´s was not confirmed at present time and we have the right to classify them as vulnerable or endangered species. For example Colletes maidli, Colletes mlokossewiczi, Andrena combaella, Andrena hungarica, Andrena mocsaryi, Camptoproeum friesli, Halictus elegans, Coelioxys haemorrhoa, Osombus laesus, Eucera chyzopyga and Xylocopa valga. Then there are species of Mediterranean and steppe origin with northernmost border of distribution in Slovakia, occurring in rocky forest-steppes and thermophilic quercine forests (Melitturga praestans, Camptopoeum frontale, Panurginus labiatus, Rhodanthidium septemdentatum, etc.). Species of steppe and Central-European origin which are of scientific importance are included here, too. They reach the northernmost border of their distribution in our territory and they occur in rocky steppe biotopes (Megachile pilideus, Chalicodoma hungarica, Chalicodoma parietina, etc.).

Abstract: On the basis of original studies and data from literature, 25 species of the family Zygaenidae were found in Slovakia (10 species from the subf. Procridinae and 15 species from the subf. Zygaeninae). Of them, 11 species are considered to be threatened species (10 species are vulnerable and 1 species has local distribution and 11 species reach to higher locations (above altitude of 900 m). The greatest number of species are xerothermophilic preferring open areas and ecotones. Seven species of the subf. Procridinae belong to the category of threatened species and three species of them are more common in Slovakia (Rhagades pruni, Adscita globulariae and A. statices). The presence of two species reaching the northern boundary of their area in south Slovakia - Theresimina ampelophaga and Adscita budensis is confirmed only on the basis of old literature data. Adscita graeca and A. notata are the most endangered species of the subf. Procridinae. The subf. Zygaeninae has only three threatened species. The distribution of Zygaena minos has been known insufficiently in Slovakia (conspicuous similarity between Zygaena minos and Z. purpuralis). Zygaena filipendulae is the most abundant species of the subf. Zygaeninae and has wide distribution in Slovakia. Xerothermophilic Zygaena laeta occurring on isolated localities of south Slovakia is the most endangered species of the subf. Zygaeninae. Populations of the family Zygaenidae are the most endangered by negative anthropogenic influences across xerothermic biotopes of low and middle locations (intensive agriculture, viticulture, building up of industrial objects, communications, vegetation burning in spring, fertilization, application of pesticides, afforestation) and by natural forest and shrubs succession. For protection of very local and threatened species it will be necessary to form a network of the reserves.

Zoznam vtáčích druhov subalpínskeho stupňa Západných Tatier - Roháčov za posledných 120 rokov

List of bird species occurring in the subalpine zone of the Západné Tatry - Roháče mountains over the past 120 years [in Slovak with English abstract]

Abstract: In this contribution the occurrence of birds has been evaluated in the subalpine zone of the Západné Tatry - Roháče Mountains (plant communities: Vaccinio myrtilli-Pinetum mughi, Vaccinietum myrtilli, Nardetum strictae, Calamagrostietum villosae, Athyrio-Piceetum) between 1870 and 1996. As documentation material, for drawing up such a list of bird species both the published and unpublished data (diaries, preparation material) of A. Kocyan (between 1870 and 1910, A. Kocian (1919-1922, 1928-1931, 1942-43, 1948, 1958, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967) and our own observations (1974-1966) were used. During this period 64 species were documented in this region, of them 25 species were breeders (27% of all bird breeders occurring between the montane and the alpine zones of the Roháče Mountains. During the first period (data of A. Kocyan and A. Kocian) 42 species were found, 17 species were breeders, while our own observations (1974-1996) confirmed the occurrence of 60 species and 20 species were breeders. The increase of species in the second period is explained by the fact that on the basis of the available materials, in some species of the first period we were unable to determine their exact hypsometric distribution, i.e. whether these species occurred only in the alpine zone or also in other zones (in the Table they are designated by a question-mark). In fact, a clearly new species to the Roháče Mountains can be considered Anas platyrhynchos (breeder), Aythya ferina, Tringa ochropus, Columba livia f. domestica and Luscinia svecica svecica (breeder), however each occurred only sporadically or even only once. Thus we believe that the breeding ornithocoenosis of the subalpine zone of the Roháče Mountains shows a rather stable composition. Also it can be stated that this ornithocoenosis has no specific species that could be classified as characteristic only to the studied vegetation zone. Such a species could be considered Luscinia svecica svecica, however in our conditions this species is in the stage of forming and establishing its breeding populations. Comparisons of bird populations of the subalpine zone of the Roháče Mountains with bird species inhabiting similar biotopes in other parts of the Slovak and the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains (Mošanský, 1974, Glowaciński, Profus, 1992) revealed considerable similarities.

Abstract: Weevils (Apionidae) were studied in the eastern part of the Bukovské vrchy hills in 1994 - 1996. During this period 46 species of Apionids were found. From among the habitats studied, field and forest road margins, hay mesophilous meadows and pastures were very rich, both with respect to the number of species and the number of individuals captured. Fewest species and individuals were captured in dry and swampy meadows, and in the stream tall-herb communities. The occurrence of Ceratapion armatum bound trophicaly to Centaurea jacea, of several xerothermophilous species (Squamapion atomarium, Squamapion oblivium, Squamapion hoffmanni, Squamapion flavimanum, Eutrichapion melancholicum, Protapion ruficrus) as well as of the rare species (Squamapio cineraceum and Nanophyes brevis) is most interesting from the faunistical point of view.
