Mammuthus trogontherii (Pohlig, 1885) (Proboscidea, Mammalia) from the sands and gravels of the Danube or the Váh river near the Okoč village in South Slovakia

Abstract: Mammoth tooth of the species Mammuthus trogontherii was found near the Okoč village close to the Veľký Meder town during the gravels and sands mining. Findings of the rests of the Mammuthus trogontherii in Slovakia are more rare than discoveries of the Mammuthus primigenius. Extraction of gravel is carried out in Okoč grab excavator to a depth more than 20 m. The tooth was dredged from below the water level in the gravel, we do not know, nor how deep was dredged, so we could not make a lithological profile. Location is situated at Žitný ostrov island. It is built primarily by fluvial sediments, mainly gravel and sand. There are also sandy–clayey sediments. Several rivers changed their channels during the Pleistocene and Holocene. It is possible that Váh river and Danube river sediments can be mixed in the locality. The lower right third molar m3dext was found. Chewing surface is of a rectangular oblong shape, front end is angular, back end of the chewing surface is acuminous. Tooth has twelve ridges, dentiplanum is created in the front part, the first dental plate is destroyed. Tooth surface covers a relatively thin layer of cementum. The finding of this species indicates in Europe the age of 600,000 – 700,000 to 250,000 years (Middle Pleistocene).

New distributional records of mite Kuzinia laevis (Dujardin, 1849) (Astigmata, Acaridae) and notes on its life cycle

Abstract: There are more phoretic species of Acarina associated with bumblebees. Kuzinia laevis (Dujardin, 1849) is most frequent among astigmatid mites. In this paper, new distributional records of deutonymph stage of K. laevis phoretic on two species of Bombus Latreille, 1802 (B. terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) and B. lapidarius (Linnaeus, 1758)) are given. Two hundred forty seven deutonymphs were found on three new localities from Slovakia. Life cycle of this mite, along with some notes to its biology and ecology are presented in discussion.

Abstract: In the period from August 2009 to July 2011 research on harvestmen communities was carried out in traditionally used vineyard landscape in Svätý Jur area in the Malé Karpaty Mts. This model area represents landscape with occurrence of historical structures of agricultural landscape (HSAL), that create a species rich of unique islands that are result of long term mutual relationship between man and the landscape. The HSAL are inhabited by various animal taxonomical groups including also the harvestmen (Opiliones). The harvestmen individuals were captured by pitfall traps method. In total, 386 specimens belonging to 13 harvestmen species and to 3 families were obtained during two-year research. Majority of obtained harvestmen species are typical ones for fragmented thermophilic microhabitats of the vineyard landscape in Slovakia, namely eudominant species Lacinius horridus (dominance = 28.2 %), Phalangium opilio (24 %), Opilio saxatilis (13.7 %) and Nelima semproni (11.4 %). On the other hand, the hygrophilous species Mitostoma chysomelas, Trogulus nepaeformis and Trogulus tricarinatus have been also obtained, but only with sporadic occurrence.

The paper presents result of research focused on the chosen groups of arachnids (Arachnida: Opiliones, Pseudoscorpiones, Acari, Araneae) of water–filled tree holes on 3 sites in the Diviacka Nová Ves village (Western Slovakia). Arachnids were captured by pitfall trapping in 13 holes on 5 tree species (oak, beech, elm, maple, cherry tree) in 2012. In total, 50 individuals of Opiliones (4 species), Pseudoscorpiones (1 genus), Acari (1 suborder), Araneae (22 species) were recorded in the researched area. Spiders Anyphaena accentuata (Walckenaer, 1802), Pardosa alacris (C. L. Koch, 1833) and Tenuiphantes flavipes (Blackwall, 1854) were the most frequently sampled species. Research confirmed that tree holes provide suitable conditions for several arachnids.

Contribution to the knowledge of harwestmen (Opiliones) of the Štiavnické vrchy Mts

The paper deals with the results of faunistic research of harvestmen (Opiliones) undertaken on 6 selected localities in the Štiavnické vrchy Mts (Central Slovakia) during 21–23 June 2012. In total, an occurrence of 9 species from 3 families (Nemastomatidae, Dicranolasmatidae and Phalangiidae) were recorded. The examined material consists of 40 individuals, which were collected individually from vegetation and rocky slopes, under stones, under pieces of decaying wood and loose bark of old trees. The list of species with specimen numbers are given in the paper. Regarding the ecological requirements, most of species can be classified as hygrophilous and sylvicoles. The work complements existing knowledge about the distribution of these invertebrates in the concerned territory. Key words: Opiliones, harvestmen, faunistics, Slovakia, Štiavnické vrchy Mts.

During an inventory of dragonflies of Šujské rašelinisko in 2013, 20 species were discovered. Occurence of the species of the Community interest Coenagrion ornatum i s c onfirmed, a s w ell a s f our s pecies o f n ational i mportance (Anax imperator, Aeshna isosceles, Orthetrum coerulescens, Sympetrum pedemontanum) and nine species included in the national Red List (Ischnura pumilio, Coenagrion ornatum, Aeshna isosceles, Aeshna juncea, Orthetrum coerulescens, Orthetrum brunneum, Sympetrum pedemontanum, Sympetrum danae, Leucorrhinia rubicunda). From a faunistic viewpoint, the most interesting are reports of Leucorrhinia rubicunda and Aeschna isosceles, whereby the site is a new one for them in Slovakia.

Výsledky výskumu vážok (Insecta: Odonata) Popradského rašeliniska

There were 19 species of dragonflies discovered during the research conducted at Popradské rašelinisko fen in 2013. Three species are protected (Sympecma fusca, Anax imperator, Sympetrum pedemontanum), 8 are listed in the national Red List (Sympecma fusca, Lestes virens, Ischnura pumilio, Aeshna juncea, Orthetrum brunneum, Crocothemis erythraea, Sympetrum danae and Sympetrum pedemontanum). In the case of Sympecma fusca, Lestes dryas and Lestes virens these are the first published records from this site. List of species is thus extended up to 23 species of dragonflies (plus 2 species with questionable data), which ranks the site among the most important wetlands in the region of Podtatranská kotlina valley. Occurrence of 8 previously published species was not observed. Among them Coenagrion armatum, which likely is only an irregular element of Slovak dragonfly fauna.

Mnohonôžky (Diplopoda) Pieninského národného parku The millipedes (Diplopoda) of the Pieniny National Park (Slovakia)

The bilateral Slovak and Polish Pieniny National Park protects small important limestone area and surrounding flysch mountains in the north-east part of the Western Carpathians. Millipedes were traditionally studied on the Polish side while in Slovak side the faunistic research was neglected till now. During the years 1998–2008 the millipedes from three orographic units (Pieniny, Ľubovnianska vrchovina and Spišská Magura) in the Slovak side of the protected area (PIENAP) were investigated. In 54 samples 781 specimens were obtained, which belong to 25 species from 6 orders. The order Julida was the most diversified (12 spp), but the highest number of individuals belong to the order Glomerida with predominancy of Glomeris tetrasticha. The occurrence of Carpathian endemites Polyzonium eburneum, Xestoiulus carpathicus, Polydesmus tatranus is remarkable. Other one is Julus terrestris, which is rare in the Carpathian mountain ecosystems. Beech forests were the habitats with the highest diversity of millipedes (20 spp) in comparison with the other habitats. Altogether 28 species of millipedes are known from both side of bilateral protected area now. The absence of many Carpathian endemic species in the Pieniny National Park is discussed. Problems with taxonomy of Glomeris mnischechi are analysed in details, too. Morphological features are variable and published data to the distribution pattern and ecology of this species are controversial. If “G. mnischechi” is a result of hybrid cross of the other species, or geographic form of G. hexasticha or even endemic species is still unclear and it has to be exposed to precise scan-electron microscopic and molecular analysis of the specimens.

In the period from May 2012 until September 2013 we investigated composition of opiliofauna in two protected areas in Central Slovakia, in beechoak forest stand in the Boky National Nature Reserve and oak forest stand in the Rohy Nature Reserve. We conducted also the study plots in management forest near the Rohy NR. Total of 13 harvestmen species have been recorded in the Boky NNR and 17 ones in the Rohy NR. The species Lacinius ephippiatus (dominance = 27.9 %), Oligolophus tridens (18.4 %) and Lophopilio palpinalis (14.9 %) were eudominant in the Boky NNR and the species Trogulus nepaeformis (23.8 %), Zacheus crista (18.4 %) and Trogulus tricarinatus (10.7 %) were eudominant in the Rohy NR. Species spectrum of harvestmen known till now from the Kremnické vrchy Mts (26 species, including the Boky NNR) and the Zvolenská kotlina basin (24 ones, including the Rohy NR) have been presented.

Records of Pannonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi) in the south–western Slovakia in 2011

The P annonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi Éhik, 1928) is one of the most endangered small mammal in Central Europe. The major cause of the vulnerability appears to be its habitat specificity. The Pannonian root vole lives in moist habitats mainly with reed bed and sedge cover. It needs stable water regime without extreme fluctuations (long–term dryness and floods). The distribution range of the root vole in Slovakia is restricted to south–west regions of country. In the present study we investigated the recent occurrence of species in suitable habitats of south–western Slovakia in 2011. Totally 40 localities were surveyed by live–trapping with traps deployed in lines with 5 – 15 m distance between trap points. Altogether 168 individuals of root vole were caught. The species has been recorded at 16 localities, whereas at 11 of these localities the root vole was found for first time.

Parentocirrus hortualis Voss, 1997 (Ciliophora: Stichotrichia) was found for the first time in the territory of Slovakia in a moss sample taken at the locality of Tisovec – Rimava. The species was cultivated using the non-flooded Petri dish method. Some cultures were grown also on the salad medium. Its morphology and morphometry were studied with standard methods. The obtained results were compared with the original and subsequent descriptions of this species. All important characteristics match and hence their conspecificity is beyond any doubts.

In total, 5 species of millipedes from 4 families were recorded: Glomeris tetrasticha, Polyzonium germanicum, Leptoiulus trilobatus, Polydesmus complanatus and Polydesmus denticulatus. Millipede communities of the investigated peatlands were dominanted by Glomeris tetrasticha and Leptoiulus trilobatus, the second species was the most frequent in 4 investigated peatlands.

The research of hirudofauna of the Hron and Rimava River basins was aimed at the structure of leech communities, individual quantity and distribution of species in longitudinal gradient of river basin profile. Samples were collected seasonally at 58 sites in the Hron River basin and at 43 sites in the Rimava River basin. Totally, we recorded 11 leech species in both studied river basins (Hron River basin – 9 species, Rimava River basin – 8 species). Based on ANOSIM and DA we identified four significant different leech communities in the Hron River basin and three significant different leech communities in the Rimava River basin. We determined the vertical and longitudinal distribution of leech species in main channel of selected river basins. Erpobdella vilnensis was the most common species in the epirhithral and metarhithral zone, Erpobdella octoculata was the most common species in hyporhithral and Erpobdella nigricollis in the epipotamal zone.

BATRACHOFAUNA A HERPETOFAUNA POPRADSKÉHO RAŠELINISKA

Popradské rašelinisko is a part of the Poprad Basin, which is subdivision of the Sub-Tatra Basin. Occurrence of batracho- and herpetofauna there was carried in the interval of years 2002–2013. The research of this locality was based on irregular visits from June to September. During this research they were identified 5 species of amphibians and 5 species of reptiles. The most common species was Bufo bufo from amphibians and Natrix natrix (Linnaeus, 1758) and Vipera berus from reptiles. All of these species were confirmed during each season. Our findings also confirm some of the older data from this region that means all observed species of amphibians and Lacerta agilis, Zootoca vivipara, Natrix natrix and Vipera berus among reptiles. Absence of some species, such as Salamandra salamandra or Anguis colchica is remarkable. From the mapping point of the view is very interesting the first record of Natrix tessellata in the Poprad Basin. We discuss also aspects of the vulnerability of the amphibians and reptiles with regard to observed locality.

PRVONÁLEZY MNOHONÔŽOK (DIPLOPODA) NA SLOVENSKU

The first records of millipedes (Diplopoda) from Slovakia

Four species of millipedes are announced for the first time from the territory of Slovakia. The manuscript was prepared by Ján Gulička and after his death found in his heritage. Although some pages were lost, the editors reconstructed available data with only few corrections and present it as it is. The manuscript was apparently written gradually, probably the first version in 1970, other parts were added later in the first ten years of this century. Three of the announced species belong to the Eastern Carpathian province and in Slovakia they reach the westernmost border of their distribution: Entomobielzia kimakowizii, Ochogona jankowskii (both found in the mountain beech forests of the Bukovské vrchy Mts.) and Enantiulus transsilvanicus (recorded in the fragments of lowland forests near the town Kráľovský Chlmec). The last species, Ochogona caroli was documented in the north-western parts of the Slovak Carpathians, near the border with the Czech Republic. The author added some original faunistic data to this species from the Czech Republic, together with information about some co-existing species.

Monitoring of the order Lepidoptera in the area of Bežnisko in Záhorská lowland

Monitoring of the order Lepidoptera was conducted from 2011 to 2013 in the area of Bežnisko, of the NATURA 2000 system. The locality belongs to the Pannonian areas of wind-blown sands. It is the best preserved and the largest one in Slovakia. Nine hundred twenty six butterfly species were detected there and six of these were first discoveries within the entire Slovak territory. The work also contains a marginal description of the bionomics and ethology of selected rare species. The conclusion gives a list of the most important rules for the management of the area in question suitable for the protection of psammophilous insects.

A faunistic investigation of pseudoscorpions was performed in the Burda Mts. A total of 459 specimens of 13 species from five families were examined in the whole study area. Most of the recorded species belonged to the families of Chernetidae (five species) and Neobisiidae (four species). The most numerous species was Roncus cf. lubricus L. Koch, 1873. Rare thermophilous species Atemnus politus (Simon, 1878) was found in the Burda Mts. The species were recorded in tree hollows, under the tree bark, in bat excrements; sieved and extracted from leaf litter and soil; found in compost heaps and collected under the stones.

Monitoring of the order Lepidoptera in the Velká Fatra National Park

Monitoring of the Lepidoptera order in the territory of the Veľká Fatra National Park was carried out in selected localities of altitudes ranging from 500 to 1350 meters above sea level. The research was focused on the mountainous unforested areas adjoining the upper forest boundary, spruce growths, beech growths, mountain valleys, sun-heated rocks, shady rocks in the forested complex and rocky slopes covered with rich meadow growth. During the period from 2009 to 2013 there were 890 species of butterflies registered in the area.

PRÍSPEVOK K POZNANIU VÝSKYTU DENNÝCH MOTÝĽOV (RHOPALOCERA) V URBÁNNOM PROSTREDÍ KOŠÍC (SLOVENSKO)

Contribution to the knowledge of the butterflies (Rhopalocera) distribution in urban environment of Košice city (Slovakia)

The author states the occurrence of butterflies (Rhopalocera) from urban environment of Košice city (Slovakia, 48˚40’N, 21˚13’’ E) over the years 2009–2011. A total of 1 885 individuals belonging to 45 species and 6 families of butterflies were observed. On the basis of results it can be concluded that the area meets the conditions necessary for the successful development of most heliophilous butterflies. From the faunistic point of view there was a significant capture of several individuals of species Papilio machaon, Iphiclides podalirius and Lycaena dispar, which are protected by international conventions and regulation of the Ministry Environment.

Bats (Chiroptera) of underground artillery caverns in Bratislava surroundings

The paper presents the results of the 20-years research (1994–2013) of bats wintering in the underground artillery caverns, built as Bratislava city defense during the years 1914–1915. In 31 caverns (out of the 48 known caverns) the presence of bats was recorded. Altogether 10 bat species were observed in studied sites (Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis myotis, Myotis bechsteinii, Myotis nattereri, Myotis mystacinus/brandtii, Myotis daubentonii, Eptesicus serotinus, Barbastella barbastellus, Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus) with a frequency of 1–9 individuals per one control and site.

Contribution to the knowledge of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) distribution in surrounding of villages from north-eastern Slovakia, part 2 – Potoky (the Ondavská vrchovina Mts)

The author investigated butterflies of superfamily Papilionoidea in the surrounding of village Potoky (49°15´32˝ N, 21°37´33˝ E, Ondavská vrchovina highlands) during years 2012–2013. Totally were identified 62 butterfly species and 2,151 individuals belonging to 5 families. The obtained data helps to spread knowledge of butterflies in the territory of north-eastern Slovakia. Among species were also recorded several species with different status of threatened of European and National importance (Iphiclides podalirius, Lycaena dispar, Phengaris arion, Polyommatus daphnis, Brenthis ino, Melitaea phoebe, M. diamina, M. aurelia and M. britomartis).

VPLYV BARIÉR NA JARNÚ MIGRÁCIU DRUHU BUFO BUFO V OBLASTI KUČIŠDORFSKEJ DOLINY V MALÝCH KARPATOCH

Barrier impact on the Bufo bufo spring migration in the area of Kučišdorf Valley in Malé Karpaty Mts

Water organisms are very sensitive to changes in water ecosystems resulting in drying off the landscape. These conditions are supported by fragmentation of land with corridors creating barriers for organisms. Typical example could be a mass decline of amphibian on roads during spring migration. In the area of Malé Karpaty Mts (Kučišdorf Valley) the main goals of the research were the evaluation of the barrier impact to the spring migration of common toad (Bufo bufo) species, to compare of spring and return migrations and mortality of common toad individuals. The research was held in spring 2014 and conclusions were comparing to conclusions in the years 2011–2013 realized by State Organization of the Nature Conservation. In the research area the most frequent amphibian species was common toad (Bufo bufo). The main barrier for the amphibian migration was the road through the valley. In the research area in the 2014 year through the spring migration were determined 62 individuals, from that 38 individuals of male a 12 pairs and were detected 100 perished Bufo bufo individuals. In the return migration were perished 39 individuals of Bufo bufo, 74 % individuals of male and 26 % individuals of Bufo bufo female.

PAVÚKY (ARANEAE) NELESNÝCH STANOVÍŠŤ VYSŤAHOVANÉHO ÚZEMIA HORNEJ CIROCHY

Spider fauna (Aranea) in non-forest habitats of the evicted area of the Horná Cirocha

In the period 2011 – 2013 research on spider fauna was carried out in non-forest habitats of the evicted area of the Horná Cirocha Catchment in the Poloniny National Park. Spiders were captured using pitfall traps, sifting, sweeping of vegetation and Malaise trap. Totally 26,885 specimens belonging to 234 spider species and 25 families were obtained during research period. The highest species richness for the whole research period was recorded on the mountain meadow Ruské 3 (83 species). From identified spiders, 38 species are listed in the Red List of Spiders of Slovakia of different threat category of threat. Micaria coarctata (Lucas, 1846) is new species for the Slovak spider fauna.

Partial results of fish monitoring in frames of the reporting for Natura 2000

Ichtyological investigations were performed on 9 partial localities of protected territories Natura 2000 includes: Hnilec, Hornád, Chotčianka, Oľka, Oľšava, Ondava, Svinka, Topľa and Torysa Rivers, during year 2013. Nine catches were performed twice per year. Overall 2666 specimens of fishes were caught. Total value of fishes, were greater in summer season (1686 specimens) in comparison with autumnal catches (980 specimens). The sample consisted of the 25 fish species from 7 families and one species of lamprey (Eudontomyzon danfordi). The occurrence of eleven Natura 2000 monitored species (E. danfordi, Barbus barbus, Barbus meridionalis, Cobitis taenia, Gobio albipinnatus, Gobio kesslerii, Gobio uranoscopus, Rhodeus sericeus, Sabanejewia balcanica, Thymallus thymallus, Zingel streber) were confirmed.

Sčítanie zimujúcich orliakov morských (Haliaeetus albicilla) na slovenskom úseku Dunaja v zime 2012/2013

Census of wintering white-tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Slovak section of the Danube river in winter 2012/2013

Data on wintering population of white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla Linnaeus, 1758) presented in this report were synchronously sampled by experienced voluntary observers from 50 stationary points on 26. 1. 2013 since 9:00 till 14:00. Points were distributed along Danube banks between river km (rkm) 1863–1708 (with partially uncovered sections between rkm 1775–1764, 1741–1735, 1731–1727, and 1722–1714) and dikes of Gabčíkovo hydro power plant´s (GHPP) storage lake and head- and tailwater canal. Points were arranged to provide optimal range of vision from each one. Census was realized in favourable weather conditions with good visibility. Totally, in whole investigated area of Danube River and water bodies of GHPP, 57 individuals of W-tSE were recorded. Among them, 20 adults and 23 immature birds were identified. Highest concentration of W-tSEs was found in river sections of the Danube river between RKM 1818–1808 (10 W-tSEs (4 adults, 6 immatures)), rkm 1828–1818 (7 W-tSEs (3 adults, 4 immatures)), rkm 1843–1835 (7 W-tSEs (2 adults, 1 immature)) and in upper part of storage lake of GHPP, rkm 1857– 1853 (4 W-tSEs (1 adult)). Highest density was in section of branch system with adjacent area (rkm 1843–1809) with 0.79 bird per 1 rkm) and storage lake of GHHP with adjacent area with 0.71 bird per 1 rkm). Lowest density (0.18 bird per 1 rkm) was found in section rkm 1766–1709 with highly urbanized right bank.

Historical findings of the Pannonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi) in the first half of 20th century

Root vole consists of 30 subspecies distributed in Holarctic. The subspecies Pannonian root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi Éhik, 1928) is one of the rarest, since it occurs only in isolated areas of Central Europe. This paper brings together some early facts about the subspecies assembled from historical papers, correspondence, and information from the museum collections with the aim to identify and assign the museum specimens to the records. The oldest known specimens, collected by the taxidermist Károly Kunszt at the end of 19th century, come from the vicinity of Šamorín. The exact trapping locality of at least some of them is the Danubian island Helena at the river kilometer 1845. The oldest specimen probably comes from the year 1892; however, the exact date and locality of collection of this specimen have not been stated. The type set originally used to describe the mehelyii subspecies comprised 15 specimens also coming from K. Kunszt. Four of them (1 holotype and 3 paratypes) were identified; the rest of the paratype set could not be identified unambiguously.

Altitudinal distribution of noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) in Slovakia

Distribution of noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) at 380 sites of running water in Slovakia were analysed with aim to identify altitudinal distribution of noble crayfish. The highest altitude of crayfish occurrence in Slovakia is reaching 600 meters, curiously without specific relation to the overall height of surrounding mountains, thus narrow streams of upper hill areas are inhabites as well as wide streams of submountaineous areas in high mountains. There are 4 regions in Slovakia, where noble crayfish does reach the upper limit of its occurrence - Liptov (Veľká Fatra NP) a Orava at north, Javorie in central Slovakia, and the Laborecká vrchovina at eastern Slovakia. All sites belong to Western Carpathian region.

Monitoring of crayfish populations in the Biele karpaty Mts, Slovakia

In frames of the species populations and habitat monitoring for the reporting of Natura 2000, network of sites were monitored for occurrence of crayfish species and additional inventory research revealed new sites, where crayfish do occur. In the Biele Karpaty Mts, bilateral landscape protected area between Slovakia and Czech Republic, and neighbouring orographic units (to which streams are running form the Biele Karpaty), 18 sites with occurrence of noble crayfish were found. Most sites show a good habitat characters and population status, however there are also many sites, where crayfish were erradicated due pollution and/or other anthropic influence.
