Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 1–7

Abstract: Faunistic data on pseudoscorpions from Malá Fatra National Park, Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area and Žilinská kotlina Basin were summarized for the first time. A total of 11 species from four families were found during 2004–2015. Pseudoscorpions from Chthoniidae and Neobisiidae families were sifted from organic material or collected using pitfall traps. Only one species of the family Cheliferidae, collected by beating branches, was found. Chernetid pseudoscorpions were mostly sifted from compost heaps, garden waste and rotten hay. The most abundant was epigean species Neobisium erythrodactylum (L. Koch, 1873), majority of specimens were collected using pitfall traps in wetland area in Šujské rašelinisko Nature Reserve. In the study area, species Lamprochernes nodosus (Schrank, 1803) occurred in high abundance as well, all specimens were found in composts and rotten hay.

Planktonické kôrovce (Crustacea: Branchiopoda, Copepoda) Žitného ostrova (Slovensko)

Planktonic crustaceans (Crustacea: Branchiopoda, Copepoda) of the Žitný ostrov inland (Slovakia)

Marta Illyová & Lenka Šulíková

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 27–38

Abstract: The species composition of planktonic crustaceans was conducted in 54 ponds: 34 gravel pits and 21 native ponds, of south Slovakia, in the Žitný ostrov inland. The faunistic data on cladocerans and copepods from gravel pits of this area were summarized for the first time. During this study, 34 taxa of copepods and 69 taxa of cladocerans were recorded which includes slightly more than half of Cladocera species reported from Slovakia so far. One of these species Rhynchotalona falcata (Sars, 1862) is new in Slovakia. The most frequent species were Chydorus sphaericus (Müller, 1785) and Bosmina longirostris (Müller 1785). Seven non-native species occurred. The same number of planktonic crustacean species (85) was recorded, in the gravel pits and native ponds. The number of species found at particular sites ranged from 9 to 34 with a mean of 19. Multidimensional scaling (nMDS) showed the differences in the species composition of the two groups of pond. In native ponds the higher species richness of phytophilous species and copepods was recorded. Gravel pits contributed with more pelagic species, more non-native species and a few rare taxa, e.g. Anchistropus emarginatus Sars, 1862, Camptocercus rectirostris Schöedler, 1862, Chydorus gibbus (Sars, 1890), Kurzia (K.) latissima Kurz, 1875 and Diacyclops bisetosus (Rehberg, 1880) occurred there. The study showed that isolated artificial gravel pits can be a significant and alternate habitat for planktonic crustaceans.

Jozef Lacko, Bystrík Ambruš & Andrej Fupšo

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 45–53

Abstract: Šúrsky rybník pond, located in Nature reserve Šúr, covers an area of 10.98 ha. The presented work was focused on qualitative and quantitative research of bird communities of the pond and its near surroundings during years 2010–2012. The work also compares the obtained data with preceding works focused on the bird communities of this locality. The field research was conducted from September 2010 to February 2012. On the site, we found 80 bird species, 42 nidificants of them. The species observed belonged to 13 orders, of which the most numerous were Passeriformes (37 species). The highest dominance had Anas platyrhynchos (10.59 %) and Anas crecca (7.8 %), representing the eudominant and the dominant species. These two species had simultaneously the highest density, i.e. A. platyrhynchos (9 ex/10 ha) and A. crecca (7 ex/10 ha). A. platyrhynchos, Aegithalos caudatus, Turdus pilaris, Parus major, Cyanistes caeruleus, T. merula, T. viscivorus, Chloris chloris, Sitta europaea, Passer montanus, Ardea cinerea, Aythya ferina, Dendrocopos major, Dryocopus martius, Fulica atra, Aythya fuligula and Cygnus olor were among the euconstant species. In comparison with previous scientific works, eudominant species observed by Kupcová (1960) were A. platyrhynchos (79.09 %), Fulica atra (49.38 %), A. querquedula (34.81 %), Emberiza schoeniclus (22.59 %), Acrocephalus arundinaceus (20.98 %) and Vanellus vanellus (17.39 %). Diversity index reached value 1.67, equitability index was 0.88 and Sörensen index of biotope similarities was 22.5. Detrended correspondence analysis was used to assess the field data, which divided individual species on the biotope preference basis.

DENNÉ MOTÝLE (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) LÚK KÚPEĽOV SLIAČ A OKOLIA (SLOVENSKO)

Butterflies (Lepidoptera, Papilionoidea) of the meadows in Spa Sliač and its surroundings

Lenka Sarvašová

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 63–71

Abstract: The research was carried out in a spa Sliač in Zvolenská kotlina basin (central Slovakia) in nine research plots belonging to three categories according to management intensity: (1) intensively mowed meadows, (2) extensive pastures and (3) abandoned pastures under the secondary succession. Butterflies were recorded by transect methods during three seasons in 2009 – 2011. We recorded 1043 adult individuals belonging to 5 families and 46 taxons. Maniola jurtina (Linnaeus, 1758) was the most abundant species. Six species from the Red List of Slovakia were recorded: Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758), Lycaena alciphron (Rottemburg, 1775), L. dispar (Haworth, 1803), Phengaris arion (Linnaeus, 1758), Melitaea phoebe (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Polyommatus bellargus (Rottemburg, 1775) and one pair of species Melitaea aurelia (Nickerl, 1850)/ Melitaea britomartis (Assmann, 1847). The highest butterfly abundance and species richness were in abandoned pastures. In the contrary, intensively mowed meadows were characterized by lowest butterfly abundance and species richness. As for the intensity of management, our research confirmed that the extensively used grasslands and grasslands under the early stages of secondary succession are the most suitable for the butterfly communities. The lepidopterocenosis of spa meadows were similar to that of the city parks. Planting melliferous herbs into flower-beds in park seems to be a good solution how increase biodiversity as these “flower islands” provide insects temporary shelter and nectar source after the all-over mowing of the meadows.

Winter observation of weevils (Coleoptera, Curculionoidea) on Scots pines in Borská nížina lowland (SW Slovakia)

Milada Holecová, Adrianna Králiková, Katarína Hollá & Miroslava Šebestová

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 91–98

Abstract: During two winter seasons (2013–2014 and 2014–2015), we collected insects from branches of Scots pine trees in the Borská nížina lowland (SW Slovakia) using beating method. A total of 21 weevil species were collected at five localities and ten study plots. Pine specialists were represented by six species (Anthonomus phyllocola, Brachonyx pineti, Brachyderes incanus, Magdalis memnonia, Magdalis phlegmatica, and Pissodes castaneus). The rest of the winter fauna were tourist species. Three eudominant pine specialists (Anthonomus phyllocola, Brachonyx pineti, Brachyderes incanus) exhibited different trends in abundance during the examined period. The abundance of Brachyderes incanus gradually rose from November until to March. On the other hand, the higher abundance of Brachonyx pineti was observed in late autumnal and prevernal months (November and the beginning of March). Adults of Anthonomus phyllocola hatch in early March and therefore they were not observed during late autumnal and winter months. The highest species diversity and abundance of the hibernating weevil fauna was observed in younger and middle-aged, dense-canopied forest stands. They probably provide a better opportunity to shelter in comparison with forest patches and non-canopied, free-growing trees. It is likely that increased activity of leaf-eating insects in forest canopies in the non-growing season may be a result of global warming and climate change.

Zriedkavá varieta lienky veľkej anatis ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758) v. hebraea (Coleoptera, Coccidellidae) zistená na Slovensku

rare variety of eyed ladybird Anatis ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758) v. hebraea (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) found in Slovakia

Ján Kollár & Ladislav Bakay

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 99–101

Abstract: In 2016, a revision of older entomological collections was realized. The collections were provided by Anton Kollár. During the revision, an interesting and rare variety of eyed ladybird Anatis ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758) v. hebraea has been discovered. This variety of eyed ladybird occurs very sporadically in Europe. The sample was found in Cabaj Čápor village near Nitra city (DFS 7774a). The rare variety could be a result of mutation, caused by low level of eyed ladybird population in the locality. It is an interesting abberation, since all its spots are fused together, except spots 3 and 10 (the composition of spots is according to scheme 1+2+4+5+6+7+8+9, 3, 10).

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 109–114

Abstract: Author presents a species spectrum of harvestmen (Opiliones) identified during vegetation season 2013 in the Nature Reserve Šujské rašelinisko peat bog in north-west Slovakia. Nature Reserve Šujské rašelinisko peat bog is declared to protect of rare and protected fen and peat bog plant species and their communities. In total, 209 specimens of harvestmen, representing 14 kinds, belonging to four families have been determined from the Šujské rašelinisko peat bog. Listed 14 kinds of harvestmen constitutes 40.0% of the total species spectrum of harvestmen (n = 35) previously known from Slovakia. As the eudominant species were found Lophopilio palpinalis (Dominance = 23.92), Nemastoma lugubre (20.1), Oligolophus tridens (18.18) and Phalangium opilio (13.4). They are eurytopic and hygrophilous (except Phalangium opilio) species whose occurrence in moist microhabitats in peat bog is expected. On the other hand, the open sun and overheating peat bog microhabitats are suitable for occurrence of the heliophilous harvestmen Phalangium opilio. Rilaena triangularis was a dominant species (D = 6.7). As the subdominant species were recorded Platybunus pallidus (D = 3.83), Platybunus bucephalus and Lacinius ephippiatus (both D = 2.87) and Leiobunum rupestre (2.39). Among harvestmen, which mostly occur in conditions of peat bogs, fens, wetlands and waterlogged floodplain communities in our country we can be classified mainly Lacinius ephippiatus, Mitopus morio, Oligolophus tridens, Nemastoma lugubre, Rilaena triangularis, Astrobunus laevipes, Mitostoma chrysomelas, Lophopilio palpinalis, Platybunus bucephalus and other.

Habitat preferences of small mammals occurring in two studied wetlands of the Žitný ostrov area

Veronika Hulejová Sládkovičová, Peter Miklós, Katarína Hollá, Veronika Búliková & Dávid Žiak

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 229–233

Abstract: The wetlands in fragmented agriculture landscape of Žitný ostrov offer changeable conditons, due to natural and anthropic pressure. Despite the high risk of extinction in such a fragmented habitat, there are no studies on habitat preferences of protected small mammals from this area. Hence we examined communities of small terrestrial mammals with occurrence of Microtus oeconomus mehelyi Éhik, 1928 on the territories of two wetlands at Žitný ostrov area. Totally 1092 individuals from 13 species of small mammals were recorded by live trapping. Habitat preferences of detected species were evaluated by direct gradient analysis of CCA. Species Apodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834) and Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) show high affinity for trees. Species Crocidura leucodon (Hermann, 1780), Crocidura suaveolens (Pallas, 1811), Microtus arvalis (Pallas, 1778), Sorex minutus Linnaeus, 1766, Micromys minutus (Pallas, 1771) prefer habitats with lower vegetation. The studied wetland habitats represent suitable conditions especially for dominant species Microtus oeconomus (Pallas, 1776) and Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771). M. oeconomus preferred lower Carex overgrown, while its frequency decreases with increasing coverage of trees. On the contrary, A. agrarius preferred higher vegetation.

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 239–243

Abstract: During the non-growing period (from mid-November 2014 to mid-March 2015), we studied epigeic activity of ants in Scots pine canopies. Ants were collected using pitfall traps situated at seven study plots in the Borská nížina lowland. A total of 12 species belonging to seven genera and two subfamilies were found. Two to six ant species were cumulatively recorded at the examined pine canopies during the non-growing period. The oligotope Formica polyctena was the only species with epigeic activity during the whole study period. Low air temperatures and, consequently, the low soil temperatures combined with a weak insolation and strong shadowing inhibit the epigeic activity of ants.

Folia faunistica Slovaca 21: 245–250

Abstract: Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) play the main role as vector of dangerous pathogenic parasites and pathogens in the whole world. In last period, importance of mosquitoes monitoring is raising due to emerging of Zika virus and spreading of nematode parasites in connection with migration and climatic changes. In this study, 6261 mosquitoes females of ten species were collected in different sampling sites in Bratislava, Slovakia, in south-western part of the country from June 2015 till September 2016. In three sampling sites, with high density of human and animal host, potential vectors of dangerous diseases were captures – Aedes cinereus / geminus, Ae. vexans (the most abundant species), Anopheles hyrcanus, An. maculipennis complex, An. plumbeus, Coquillettidia richiardii, Culex pipiens complex, Ochlerotatus cantans, Oc. caspius, and Oc. sticticus. Our results confirm occurrence of important vectors of parasitic and other dangerous vector-borne diseases in this area and increasing risk for transmission of emerging diseases in Slovakia.
